I completed the Online Notary Course and have obtained my certificate. What next steps must I take to become a Notary Public?

Congratulations on having successfully completed the Online Notary Course! You are now one step closer to becoming a Notary Public.

Below you will find the link to register for the state exam, as well as several other links to helpful resources. We are not involved in that part of the process of becoming a Notary Public. You should register through a separate entity called CPS HR Consulting which is authorized by the Secretary of State to administer the exam (See below link):

In summary, once you pass your notary exam, you will submit your fingerprints via Live Scan for a background check (you can find a list of locations that offer this service near you at the Secretary of State's website).

Upon approval, you will receive your notary commission packet. The next step is then to purchase and file your bond with your county clerk's office within 30 days of the commencement of your commission, and to purchase your supplies including your seal and journal.
What can I expect on the Notary Exam?

According to CPS HR Consulting, the exam administrators, the notary exam is 1-hour long with 45 multiple choice questions. 5 of the questions do not count towards your score. You need to earn a scaled score of 70% to pass the exam. The following is link to CPS HR Consulting's website, where they provide a more detailed breakdown of the content you can expect on the exam: https://exam-registration.cpshr.us/notary/notary-information
